To augment maille's pitiful protection against impact weapons, steel plates are being riveted to over-garments, acting as a flak jacket. This gave some defense against missile weapons at long range and seems to have been very popular in Germany. Simple armor for the hand is now available, usually just a steel plate which covered the hand but not the fingers. Maille gloves are common.
