Goliath challenges the Israelites |
Jesse sends provisions |
The shepherd, David |
A mammoth of a man, and a champion warrior of the
Philistine army, Goliath, challenges the Israelite army to send their best
warrior to fight him in battle. Details show: 1
-another good view of a
Bard or Barding
~ a padded fabric covering for the horse, often used to display the
heraldic marking of the knight.
2 -two heater-shields.
3 -four examples of a "Pennon",
a medium-sized flag (about 3 feet in length) flown from the head of
a spear that is held "at charge" (horizontally or near-so). Any heraldry
or artwork displayed on a pennon is oriented to be viewed in the "at
charge" position. The pennon indicated the physical presence of the person
who's arms might be displayed on it. 4
-a classic cruciform-style sword with round
pommel. 5 -first viewing of
Goliath, fully armed and armoured in
chainmaille, helm,
greaves, sword
and spear. 6
-good view of plate armour
greaves, held in place with leather straps
around the back of the legs; greaves were designed to protect the front of
the lower legs. 7 -several
points regarding this picture: the round
pommel of this sword is very ornately carved; the
grip has ornate crisscrossed leather
wrappings; the guard has noticeable engraving
marks on the ends; the metal tip on the scabbard
does not appear to be a solid piece, but is a "frame" style of tip with an
opening in the center; excellent view of the "frog"
attachment to the sword-belt.
8 -first view of the leather
arm-straps, on the back side of a heater-shield,
through which the forearm was inserted to hold the shield during battle.
9 -a version of a
Kettle-hat helm.
10 -a round battle-shield known as a
Buckler. 11
-a horse bridle with an attached "Throat
Latch", an additional leather strap going around the neck and attached to
the bridle - this kept the bridle more secure on the horse's head during
battle. In modern times, this device is typically found only on
"English" bridles (as opposed to "Western" bridles). |
Jesse sends David to the Israelite encampment with
provisions. Details show: 1 -a
man's purse (wallet).
2 -a fairly decent representation of a
dog. |
David leaves his father's flock of sheep in the capable
hands of a fellow shepherd while he travels to the Israelite encampment.
Details show: 1 -another style
of a man's purse (wallet).
2 -a unique over-garment,
which appears to be a cloth mantle (almost
Tabard in style) with an attached hood.
3 -another view of a man's
purse. 4
-period footwear called ankle-boots,
commonly worn by the "working class" after c1200AD.
5 -another view of period
footwear called ankle-boots.
6 -what appears to be a sort of
circlet, or headband on David's head. |

David delivers the provisions |
David accepts the challenge |
David brings the provisions sent by Jesse to the Israelite
encampment. Details show: 1
-a cooking pot, shown hanging on the side of
a cart. 2
-a spare kettle-hat helm, suspended on the
cart. 3 -what appears to be a
small cooking vessel, hanging on the cart. 4 -another
small cooking vessel, hanging on the cart.
5
-first viewing of a Cervelliere, a small
steel armour skullcap, often worn under a Great Helm for additional head
protection.
6 -"soft armour", a quilted leather
jerkin, complete with leather gorget (neck
protection). 7 -a variety of
weapons, from the left: a pike style weapon,
a glaive, a spear
and an axe. 8
-a heraldic type of flag, called a "Banner",
attached (in this case) to the head of a spear. Typically, they were
vertical in orientation (as seen), usually 2 "units" wide by 3 "units"
high, and represented a king, baron, overload or knight. It preceded
him in battle as a sign of his feudal rights ~ in this case, there are
three black (sable) cinquefoils on a white (argent) background (field).
9 -another
banner. 10 -first viewing
of period pavilions.
11 -period footwear
showing an open side on the inside of the foot.
12 -another view of a
Cervelliere, a small steel armour skullcap,
often worn under a Great Helm for additional head protection. |
David decided to take Goliath up on his challenge to a
battle. Details show: 1
-another view of a Cervelliere, a small steel
armour skullcap, often worn under a Great Helm for additional head
protection. 2 -a good view of a
knightly surcoat with a "keyhole" neckline. 3 -a
knight's belt.
4 -another view of plate armour
greaves, held in place with leather straps
around the back of the legs; greaves were designed to protect the front of
the lower legs; you can also see the padded, quilted Cuisses
(padding for the thighs) which appear to come to just below the knee.
5 -round steel battle-shields known as
Bucklers. 6
-another view of a sword-scabbard with the
"frame" style of metal tip. 7
-another view of a sword-scabbard with the
"frame" style of metal tip. 8
-period footwear which clearly shows the
stitching running over the top from the toe to the ankle ~ this indicates
how shoes were constructed: leather was wrapped around the foot from
underneath, then stitched closed on the top to obtain a correct fit. |
